At Ramey Racing, we elevate both performance and quality to new standards. During the development of the Mercury 450R project, we ensured that every aspect received meticulous attention—no corners were cut and no expense was spared. With the many performance upgrades we implemented, it was also important for us to provide a best-in-class fastener solution for our builds.
To achieve this, we supplied a complete block and cylinder head to P1 Manufacturing and collaborated with them to develop both a custom head and main stud solution tailored for the Ramey Racing 450R upgrade packages. We went the extra mile to develop specific tightening strategies and clamp load data to ensure that the power we are making is securely held together.
For the mains, both OEM main bolts are replaced with P1 S220 series studs rated at 220,000 psi, paired with P1 custom low-profile 12-point flange nuts designed to fit the tight clearance requirements in the bedplate area. Over 240,000 lbs of clamping force are produced by the twenty main studs in these assemblies! This combination delivers the enhanced clamp load performance and perfect fitment this package requires, offering an unmatched solution in today’s market.
The OEM head bolts were also meticulously addressed. No inexpensive torque-to-yield bolts are used here. We selected P1’s Carpenter Custom Age 625 Plus material for this part of the assembly—simply put, one of the best fastener materials available. These head studs boast an astonishing 260,000 psi tensile strength and are virtually impervious to heat and corrosion concerns. The geometry for the head stud is optimized to enhance both installation repeatability and clamp load. After the Ramey Racing upgrades, over 280,000 lbs of clamping force are holding down the heads.
P1’s critical engine fasteners are manufactured from premium-quality steel sourced from U.S. mills. Each fastener is individually racked and heat treated in-house using vacuum furnaces, overseen by a full-time metallurgist. For exceptional concentricity, every stud is centerless ground, and threads are rolled after heat treatment to ensure optimal strength. These studs are marked with both part and batch numbers for straightforward identification and traceability. P1’s 12-point nuts are cold-headed in-house and undergo vacuum heat treatment. Every critical engine fastener is produced from start to finish in P1’s state-of-the-art facility located in Rogersville, Missouri, USA.
